Bill Tieleman: Basi Virk update. No Supreme Court of Canada date yet set; disclosure hearing continues

.
Bill's blog (Dec. 9, 2008)

... The pre-trial hearing is scheduled to continue Wednesday December 10th all day, the morning only on Thursday December 11th and Friday December 12th through the day, when provincial government lawyer George Copley returns to the court after a long absence to deal with disclosure matters concerning his client.

Hmm...now that is interesting. I wonder where Neal Hall got the idea the dates had been set?

This....The nation's highest court has set an expedited date of April 22 to hear an appeal involving a dispute over whether defence lawyers should be excluded from an in-camera hearing about a confidential informant in the Basi-Virk case ...

"seems" pretty definitive...

"when provincial government lawyer George Copley returns to the court after a long absence to deal with disclosure matters concerning his client."

Let me get this straight, and please correct me if I am wrong.

I interpret this to mean that George Copley is being paid by us (all the taxpayers of BC) to provide legal representation regarding possible criminal liability of the Gordon Campbell Government and Cabinet.

Does this mean that that I can count on taxpayer funded, first class legal representation if I should find myseld defending against or trying to completely avoid criminal charges on some matter in the future? Oh no, now I remember, the BC liaR party, as one of its first dictats, reduced funding for low income access to legal representation.

Now I remember they also used legislation to overturn a court ruling that ordered them to cease their UN sanctioned attack on labor bargaining rights, this particular attack being on the Crown Prosecutors, the lawyers who actually DO REPRESENT the people of BC.

The above and the many closures of courthouses in rural BC, the ongoing attempt to make information less accessible on the website of the Attorney General, not to mention the favorite refrain of all government members, i.e. "I can't comment on that, it's before the courts," kinda shows that these guys have no respect for justice, but consider the justice system a tool to be exploited to advance and protect their, usually greed based, interests.

in case anyone is interested, I heard that tomorrow's court session startsat 9 am and lasts until 1pm.
