Bill Tieleman reports on the precedent-setting ruling as the emails of a sitting premier will be turned over to defence lawyers

.
Emails of Premier Gordon Campbell, most cabinet and political staff ruled "likely relevant" in Basi-Virk case, ordered them produced

Bill's report is HERE, and in The Hook: HERE, with more to come.

{Snip} ...

Defence lawyer Michael Bolton, representing David Basi, said outside court Bennett's decision was extremely important.

"This may be the most critical ruling in this case," Bolton said. "It's virtually unprecedented."

{Snip} ...

Bennett is now [this afternoon] hearing defence arguments that she should stay on as trial judge despite her promotion to the BC Court of Appeal earlier this year.

Joe Doyle, representing defendant Aneal Basi, argued that Bennett should rule that she will remain to hear the case.

"The accused have had you as trial judge for nearly four years ....they are facing serious charges and deserve to have you continue as the trial judge," Doyle told Bennett.

"There will be delay if this trial is assigned to a new judge - there's no question about it," Doyle said. "There's simply no replacement for having sat on the case for three and a half years."

Special Prosecutor Bill Berardino has previously argued in court that Bennett should be replaced immediately because of her promotion and a new trial judge assigned.

True to form, the BC Liberal Party's method of collecting contributions is not from the Directors of a company but from the company.

Sure wish that companies that do business with government wouldn't make contributions especially if they are handling such hot commodities as emails/documents that are relevant to an ongoing criminal case.

Nice work, N.V.G., many thanks.

Thanks for the links, SIG.

Yes, North Van Grumps, thanks for the heads-up on the EDS donations. I had expected even more quite frankly but was too lazy to look it up. I wonder how much each of the EDS corporate executives and directors donated to the BC Liberal coffers and individual campaign funds on top of this?

The correct link to EDS contribution to the BC Liberal Party coffers is here, thanks to Elections BC PCS program

Oh by the way, there is more than one company called "EDS". The second one was something that was presented to the BC provincial government in 2008, its right there on their own website.

On page 8 of 23, where the page is titled "Storage Costs Dropping" it leaves me wondering WHY the BC Liberals took the step to shred all of emails related to the BC Raid on the Legislature...... Page 8 has a list of what can be stored, and the size eg. A pickup truck filled with books = 1 gigabyte which could be stored on a USB memory stick costing $15.

All the police took away was one van, and we're not even sure it was fully loaded.

I'd be willing to bet it was shredded cuz none of them would look good in an orange jumpsuit? :=))

(IMHO...little else would look AS good!)

.
Omg, Leah,

you are bad ... you had me rolling on the carpet, laughing.

In my dreams: Which Cabinet Minister or Premier Can Jump Highest in an Orange Jump Suit When The People Say "Jump, dammit!"

Too much.
