British Columbia Railway, 454 pages, colour photos

.
A beautiful book offered at auction is:

British Columbia Railway
By J. F. Garden

ISBN 0-9691621-3-8,
454 pages, some of which you'll see if you click HERE.

Bidding now stands at US$164.00 + US$7.44 shipping charges.

Have a look. It's a handsome book which should come home to BC just like the railway ownership.

- BC Mary.

Thanks to a commentor for telling us that a copy of this book may be found in his public library (Vancouver? or Victoria?). He asks why he should be shown this information (above) when he can lay hands on this book for free.

Answer (laughing): this is a keepsake book, and a reference book, the kind of book you'd want to keep handy, maybe right on your coffee table, all day, every day. I posted the item (above) because it includes some fine photographs of the book's pages, so we can judge that for ourselves.
But in an effort to meet Anonymous Bookworm's high expectations of me, I looked up the straightforward purchase price on, e.g., Amazon: it's yours for only US$224., and this is what one of their reviewers says:

5.0 out of 5 stars British Columbia Railway. The way is was and is. October 4, 2001
By JOHN M. UHELSKI (CLEVELAND, TN. United States) - See all my reviews
Mr. Garden has done his homework here, the book is quite a masterpiece . The images shown are all classics. All areas of this hard to [find?] railfan line are covered, either by the author or other diligent photographers. The line history is likewise documented, from its beginnings to to present day. After reading this work, I am ready to pack my cameras and hike into some of the locations illustrated for a go at it. This book will be a cult classic in my opinion, well worth the money, even if you have never set foot in British Columbia, Canada.

I add, quite seriously, that this reviewer has caught the essence of why this book -- and BC Rail -- are important to us. He's not talking at all about corporate profits or political partisanship. He's not even from BC ... but he's actually talking about the way it is with British Columbians, how most of us feel heart and soul about our rivers and mountains, the scope, the meaning of it all ... and how it's ours ... know what I mean?

Comments:
Its available in my local library, why would I want to pay close to $200 US for something British Columbians own a copy of already.

NOTE: You provide four identities to choose from, until you state otherwise I'm remaining Anonymous bookworm

To Anonymous bookworm:

That was good of you to stay up all night, just so you could start another day of finding more flaws in BC Mary to tell us about ...

ABW, you're too funny!
.

Good morning Mary

Ive written a piece at my place with a PS on some commenters' IQ's. Seems some people think things are one way when they in fact aren't.
Oh, and I've searched my library and there are no books like this nor any by this author. Of course we aren't as big as the VPL. Maybe some members there could find a copy.

Here's two books with the same ISBN number, both written by J.F. Garden.

From your blog BC Mary:

British Columbia Railway
By J. F. Garden

ISBN 0-9691621-3-8,
454 pages,

Which book are you advertising on your blog BC Mary?

Are they one and the same? LOL

And if someone does come up with the cash because of your supportive advertising and then finds themselves not in possession of the one that you advertised.. can they come after you?

Question for Anonymous Bookworm:

Is that your plan ... to find a way to "come after me?"

And if so, why?
.

False and misleading advertising, however unintentional on your part is not an excuse.

Perhaps you should add a rider to your column today by way of noting that it has come to your attention only recently that there are two books written by the same author, with the same number of pages and the same ISBN number. Outstanding feature is one covers the BC Rail the other Canadian Pacific Rail.

Buyer Beware would just about cover it.

Worm,

I didn't think you could answer a straight question.

but thanks again for explaining the evil book world, so that nobody will be hurt. That is your intention, isn't it ... to protect everybody? Sure it is.

What's with the Anonymous tapeworm anyway? It's obviously not a railfan. Buy the book or don't. Discuss BC Rail subjects or crawl back in your hole.

I personally wouldnt buy the book as I have too many of the damn paged things cluttering up this place as it is. Lumber Jacks of BC, books on the Gold Rush, long dead politician themes, etc and so on.

Probably between now and next xmas I am sure someone will surprise me with another store bought collective and it may well be this one. But .........

..... what is up with Anonymous Tapeworm?

Who took a crap in her novella anyway?

Apparently the poster made the remark spawned by jealously or rage that escapes purpose, logic, or rational explanation.

Go ahead, flame out BC Mary whenever she makes mention of a book on this forum that you do not like or approve of. Its good therapy after all for Anonymous Tapeworm to get that message out.

Whatever. Pass me the Brandy.

Yes Mary, I know what you mean. It's the same spirit, I'd say, which moves you to write these words: "...this reviewer has caught the essence of why this book -- and BC Rail -- are important to us. He's not talking at all about corporate profits or political partisanship. He's not even from BC ... but he's actually talking about the way it is with British Columbians, how most of us feel heart and soul about our rivers and mountains, the scope, the meaning of it all ... and how it's ours ... know what I mean...

The same spirit which has been behind you every day since you started to publish TLR.

The idea that there are things more important than money and profits; that there is something indefinable, precious and irreplaceable about 'society' even if Margaret Thatcher claims the concept doesn't exist.

We measure real value by something more than dollar signs. Even if Gordon Campbell’s econometrics may have gained the upper hand for a while.

It will not last...

I hope you'll keep publishing the odd comment from critical anons though, it helps to underline why your work and your dedication are so vital...the contrast makes clear the reality.

.
Welcome words, G. West ... thank you.

Believe it or not, TLR doesn't get many sour critics, so

as long as the odd critical comment stays on topic, has a User Name, and is reasonably civil

they'll be posted.

And btw, I noticed that the bidding had gone quite a way UP on that copy of BRITISH COLUMBIA RAILWAY, with another day or two to go in the auction.
