Enbridge, Ipsos-Reid poll, and disinformation tactics

One of the aims of disinformation campaigns is to shake the resolve of people. And we are seeing ample evidence of this in the campaign to sell the Enbridge pipeline which, if constructed, will stretch across the lands and waterways of Northern BC and result in major oil tanker traffic in the ocean waters off BC’s Pacific coast.
Recently, an Ipsos-Reid poll, released exclusively to the Postmedia News chain, is alleging that, by a whopping 48 to 32 percentage, most people across the province are now in favour of the controversial pipeline.
The results are almost the exact opposite of another poll conducted by the Mustel polling group in 2010 and commissioned by pipeline opponent group “Forest Ethics”. That poll showed a 51 to 34 percent margin against the pipeline. The gap between the two polls is stunning.
This poll, of course, was commissioned and paid for by the Enbridge Corporation.
The results are almost the exact opposite of another poll conducted by the Mustel polling group in 2010 and commissioned by pipeline opponent group “Forest Ethics”. That poll showed a 51 to 34 percent margin against the pipeline. The gap between the two polls is stunning.
Nonetheless, despite the huge disparity in poll results, the Postmedia News chain was quick to punch out headlines such as: “New poll points to pipeline support”, as well as articles claiming that the poll could be a “game changer” for project opponents. For its part, Enbridge has issued a statement that the “new poll” will set a ’proper context’ for the launch of National Energy Board hearings into Northern Gateway that begin this month in northern B.C.” ...

$301M to build Carbon Creek mine

Cardero Resource Corp. (TSX:CDU) says its consultant estimates the Carbon Creek coal deposit in the Peace River district of northeast B.C. could support construction of a $301-million mine and related infrastructure.
The mine would take three years to build and would have a 30-year production life, based on various assumptions used in the preliminary economic assessment compiled for Cardero by Norwest Corp.
The assessment looks at various scenarios. Assuming metallurgical coal at $185 per ton, the mine would pay back the pre-construction costs at the end of the third year of production.
The Northwest report envisages construction of an open pit mine followed by an underground mine, which would be operational two years after the surface mine begins production.

Coal? Doesn't that release C02 when burned? So much for carbon-neutral BC. Why bother forcing the BC public sector to purchase $millions worth of carbon offsets if we are going to expand coal mining in BC? Makes sense not too much.

You do a most helpful service, Mary to remind us that the citizen voters this still being a democracy (to some degree) in B.C. in particular and Canada in general (although in my mind; a PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION from an election to the BC Legislative Assembly and to the House of Commons would be more democratic)...citizens that elect governments need to remember that polls are funded by CERTAIN INTERESTS. The media grasp onto these polls if it is in their interests to do so. This widespread promotion of so called polls from unknown opinion submitters is taken as truth and then SPUN. This is propaganda. And we all know from history about the power that propaganda has under an authoritarian leadership.
Adam Beach, famous First Nations Canadian actor has returned to his own country to do a CBC series on the North.He said on The National News last night(Jan.5/12) that he is against the pipeline crossing FN/Canadian lands in northern B.C.
The discussions, the venues, the scientific/environmental/high profile individuals; leadership will only grow in intensity from here. And so it should!
It takes courage to take a stand for the environment and to downsize our consumption wants in the process.

I saw that moron from Enbridge, lying in his face on the news channels regarding the dirty tar oil.
Why in hell would the people of BC approve the pipeline or the dirty oil tankers?
It's bad enough Campbell thieved and sold the BCR and Campbell's selling of our rivers, is obscene.
Those river dams destroying flora and fauna. The approval of the Kokish River dam, will destroy another salmon run and the steelhead fish run.
Harper and Campbell worked frantically to dismantle BC, before Campbell got the boot to a wonderful post as, High Commissioner to England.
Enbridge are out and out blatant liars. Thousands of BC citizens, are supporting the F.N. People, to stop the atrocities of the pipeline and the dirty oil tankers.
Shame on the news channels, for supporting the lies from Enbridge. That underhanded Enbridge pipeline spokesperson bas-turd, lied his face right off.
BC people love this provinces beauty. All our wildlife, our Whales and every marine creature...They are far more valuable than Harper and his Conservatives, the evil Campbell/Clark BC Liberals and Enbridge, could ever be.

It's good to see people endorsing Peter Ewart's work. I often feature one of his columns here, with Meisner's generous permission.
This blog is primarily focused on BC Rail, however, so I can't find space for other topics. In some way, a post must have a bearing on BC Rail which, to my mind, held the key to BC prosperity.
